Chromatic Currents
A visual exploration of color, contrast, and dimension.
The Chromatic Currents series grew from a love of color first and foremost. This body of work is inspired by my favorite complementary and split-complementary palettes, specifically the contrast between bright, warm yellows and cool lavenders and violets. Pushing these color relationships became the driving force behind the series and challenged me to work in new and exciting ways.
Rather than beginning with a deep conceptual narrative, this series was an exploration of process and form. I focused on expanding my dimensional collage style, creating my largest shadow boxes to date and incorporating mixed-media elements like hand-crafted wire details. Each piece is built in layers, allowing color, shape, and depth to interact physically within the work.
I was also inspired by other artists who allow their subjects to break the frame. In this series, sea creatures overlap a thick white mat, creating a sense of movement and emergence. This compositional choice adds another layer of dimension and invites the viewer to engage more closely with the piece.
The sea life imagery itself was chosen intuitively. I’ve long been drawn to the organic, flowing shapes found in coral reefs and marine creatures, and many of these subjects had been living in my sketchbooks for some time. Their forms lent themselves naturally to dimensional play and layered construction. And, true to my visual language, each piece includes a subtle galaxy element, bringing a familiar sense of wonder and expansiveness into the series.
The Chromatic Currents series is ultimately a celebration of color relationships, tactile construction, and visual curiosity. It’s about exploring how far dimension, contrast, and composition can be pushed while still feeling cohesive, playful, and luminous.
