What began as a celebration of the concept of a "Soul Dog" turned into three pieces created from my childhood photos about childhood memory and the idea of home. I originally set out to paint the dogs from my life and the lives of my family members who we consider to be our soul dogs; the rescue dogs who we've adopted and who we've felt overwhelmingly emotionally connections with. In the process of painting these portraits I became overwhelmed with feelings of nostalgia and the concept of a home being a certain point in time rather than a place you can revisit. I've attempted to capture these feelings through the incorporation of childlike drawings layered within the pieces themselves and through layers of iridescent, color shifting watercolor shapes intended to evoke the fleeting and effervescent feeling of a single moment lost in time. These portraits are created with individually cut and painted layers of watercolor paintings intended to invite the viewer to experience the single moment each painting represents.
